According to the well-connected Artem Russakovskii as well as a Re/code report, Android Pay is set to be launched today. This little tidbit comes despite previous rumors — thanks to leaked Verizon documentation — that the service would be launching on September 16th…
It’s not shocking that Android Pay is going to be hitting Android smartphones everywhere today, as Google has been preparing many of its apps for the service over the last couple weeks. Google Play Services was updated with the Android Pay infrastructure last week, and Google just yesterday updated its Wallet app in preparation for the old one to be pushed to Android Pay.
As we mentioned yesterday, the launch of Android Pay is coming as an update to the Google Wallet app. If you already have Google Wallet installed (the old version), you should be good to go as the update rolls out. Otherwise, we’ll let you know when the updated version officially launches. If you want to keep using Google Wallet — yes, it will live on — then check out the new app.
Announced back at Google I/O 2015, Android Pay is essentially a more user-friendly version of Google Wallet with revamped security. The service works at every tap and pay ready retailer in the United States (sorry, rest of world), and it will support credit and debit cards from all four major networks: American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa.
